14 CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 5, 1921 SITUATIOIPERPLEXING The Money Is Out and They Do Not Know Where More Is Coming From. 'pacta) The Ohwrrer. Moriroe. Jan 4 Representative Earl Erxcll and Frank Ilincrirk left todav for Kaleiuh to take up their duties in the legislature. They have some very difficult problems to solve. In addition to the many 1 aues of state-wide Importance triers are many perplexing matters of local nature requiring legslation to straighten them out. Chief among these purely local measures is one to relieve the road situation. The bond Issue of half a million dollars has been exhausted and the county has very little completed roads to show for It. The sentiment or the people of the county is such that students of the situation believe any any proposition for additional bonds at present would be snowed under, and yet there is un versal conviction that the county cannot afford to allow the road work to .tnn VluTiv roads huve m-en sianeu . , and are so badly t rn up a.s to oe in even worse condition than before , any work was done. Nearly every voter is certain that soim-thlng must be done, but there is a marked In clination to puss the buck and "let George do it." In order to Ret sentiment crystalled and give the representat ves an idea of what the people of the county want, several tentative bills are h.-inK prepared with a view to submitting them to meetings of selected citizens for approval and then a publicity cam paign for the chosen bill will be conducted by the chain her of com merce. There is some sent iment fur a different form of city government, a number of Monroe people favor ing the cornmission-maiiuxer plan over the present aldermanlc sys tem, and this will probably cause tl)e representatives to lose sleep for a night or two. Then the dozens of purely private bills designed to lceep John Johnson front tilling up Will Wilson's branch, or to make Sallie Smith keep her cow out of Millie Milliken's turnip patch will be on hand to pester the represen tatives and see to It that they earn the munificent salaries allotted them. I'nion's representatives are both young men of the progressive element in the d. r x ratic party and the county expects Iheni to re- 1 fleet credit upon it. The Cone mills, Proximity Print Jesse F. .Mllliken armed a day ' works, and "White Oak mill here or two ago from San ford and w.ll i have been able to keep running full be associated with J. I". M. In addition, the manage servlce man w th a splendid army i ment of the mills distributed $300, record and has been successful in j 000 In cash bonuses Just before the legal practice at Sanford. Christmas holidays. J. I). Simpson, for several years 1 secretary and treasury lor .1. l Rodman and company at Waxhaw. has assumed his new duties in charge of the office work in the sheriffs office. Mrs. John A. Wray had an ex- , citing experience upon her arrival home Friday night from an extend- ; ed visit to friends at Miami, Kla. j As she was passing a brick si ore , building on her way home from the 1 station after disembarking from a I late train ,a steel Jacketed bullet from a distant rifle struck the wall and rebounded, striking Mrs. Wray on the foot. The injury inflicted WM by no means serious, but the whistling- bullet and the Impact against the wall near her head was not the welcome she had expected upon her return home. The owner of the rifle from, which the bullet came was not ascertained. The Co-Operative Mercantile company, one of the larger general supply house! of Monroe, has had Its charter amended. The new firm is the Smlth-l.ee company and the stockholders are the Kama T. P. Smith, M. K. Lee. R. C. Williams and W. M. Davis. The new Stark building fronting mi Hayne street I haa been leased for a long term and : the new firm w II have quite com- ; znodious quarters, fmnting on Imth : Hayne and Jefferson streets. A committee representing the , chamber of comniern- and a iium- 1 ber of large taxpayers appeared be- I fore the county conmiisNionerH to- day and requested that they ar- ', range for hard surfacing that sec- tion of the U'ilm ngtnn-Asheville . highway lying between Lee's mill j east of town and a pout half a mile north of town I' ans have j been devised fur the cotiii y 10 fur Jilih all of the stone, cum mon labor, . etc., for this project, which is a 1 atate aid road, and in this way I very little actual money will be re- quired. The cnminisH iiihts did nut take final action, hut there is a general impression that the work will be done. CHERRYVILLE BANK IN FLOURISHING CONDITION Hpe-lal lo The OIM-ner. GREENSBORO MEN EXPECT STORM TO BE WEATHERED But Think Better Market Con ditions and Bigger Volume of Business Will Be Matter of Months. Hproial to Tlie Observer. Greensboro. Jan. 4. Textile men here make no attempt to gloss over the fact the severity of readjust ment up n the cotton manufactur ing business, but at the same time they assert they expect conditions improve gradually. They empha sized the point that betteredmarket conditions and a nigger volume of bUHlne.se will be a matter of months but they have no fear that the storm cannot be weathered. All of the mills here are In Rood financial shape and nil of them are operating on a full time basis. The past year has been a prosperous one, they Bay, the ac tivity of the first half of the year overbalancing later depression. E. Sternberger, president of the Revolution cotton mills here, stated ii a tjs lk on business conditions as they affect the cotton mills that the retailers must follow the lowering of wholesale costs- before conditions improve. He thinks that some of them are responsible for the holding up of activity and he pointed out ,1.... . l. ..,,1.1;.-, ...Ill nnl Vinr n fr - iomi me I'liy'i many until u is assuieu mm u jo getting the benefit or all reductions. Things are dull now, he said but he expects to see a difference In a few monfths. with readjustment, stability aud normal activity In the markets coming in a healthy fashion grad- nallv. He exnetts 1921 to be a pros perous one for the textile industry. C. V. Causey, secretary-treasurer of the Pomona mills here, calls the present period one of waiting, the public waiting for a level to be found in the price movement. He thinks that the crucial point In the vvave of readjustment is being passed through now. I,lke Mr. Sternberger. he said that business is inactive now. but he sees no reason to He de pressed. He stated that the outlook for 1921 is not gloomy and that a few months' time will, he thinks, find conditions greatly improved. It is possible that wages at the Pomona mills may be reduced soon. They were cut 20 per cent several weeks ago. The operatives have ac cepted the reduction in good spirit .Mr. Causey stated realizing the ne cessity.
